Why blog? Why Miamism?

by: Ines.Hegedus-Garcia on September 26, 2007 10:50:02     12 comments »

Pick-up time at the kids' school is where you find out everything that is going on in the community.  Those few minutes at the parking lot, before the children rush out of school is where you hear who is starting  new business, who is moving, what's happening in the new school, what new ordinance is coming up.......you get the picture.evil.jpg

For those that don't have kids or don't do pick-up, you miss a great deal and that's why we decided to blog.

I was talking to a mom that started a new business and told her to tell me about it and I would include it in Miamism.  Another mom heard me and asked, "Why would you do that?  What's in it for you?"

I must admit that it felt like a slap.  A slap of distrust.  A slap saying,  "You are a Realtor, all Realtors are bad, there HAS to be a hidden agenda".

Maybe I'm looking too much into it but ultimately, the slap was good, because now I'll put my guard down and tell you why we blog.

Blogging is about conversation and establishing dialogue, and in the wise words of Robert Scoble in Naked Conversations,

"It's about stripping out all the crap that gets in the way of understanding and trust between businesses and customers."

When you think of Miami Real Estate, you think of pretty brochures, open houses and Realtors who try to lure you into paying too much for a property just to get their commission.

Rick and I just happened to be in the customer's side of the equation for many years and that's why we got into business but once we crossed the line to the other side our world turned dark.  It seemed that people all of a sudden did not trust us; we were "BAD" now.

Are you kidding me???

We are the same people as before and we're here because the real estate industry has a bad reputation and we will change that one customer at a time. Please understand that we will never trash our competition, we will never talk poorly about another Realtor.....it's not our style and it's just not ethical.

Our blog:

  • will tell you what's going on in the community (good or bad)
  • will tell you about new businesses and local events
  • will answer questions about real estate and explain real estate market trends
  • will give you information about staging and preparing your property for sale and even give you advice
  • will talk about architecture, historic preservation and things we like and enjoy, including goofy and crazy stuff like in our Miamism Fridays.

We welcome your opinion even if it's an opposing one.  We want you to know us and what we are about through our blog....so ask away.  You don't have to pay and you are not expected to use our services.  We don't have a secret agenda and there is no secret Realtor code where we hide facts from the consumer and no secret hand shake either.  If you want to know about a particular issue, just ask (your name does not have to appear), we encourage discussion.

So to answer the mom's question,

  • Why would I write an article about a mom's start up business? -  To help a friend's new business
  • What's in it for us? - fame, reputation and a percentage of the proceeds........NOT!......just a show of good will......that's all.

Who would not trust you?!  You're super mom and a super Realtor.  What's not to love and trust about you?  :)

I'd trust you with my business.

Rick & Ines, I know that you are the most trustworthy and ethical people in the business.  I've been 'slapped' also, when your trying to help. Some folks just don't get it.  All we can do is do our thing and do it with pride.

Hope she does well with her business. I would take free advertising anytime!

Nick M- thank you for that. I think what's important for people to know is that we have nothing to hide. As for West Palm....you are our Realtor and appraiser of choice, you know that!

Ines: I don’t know when we first met on the Rain, but I’ve come to know you through your posts and comments over these past many months. One many learn much by what is written in posts & comments, not by how well they are written, but by what is written. What you write is from the heart and mind, and that from the heart can’t be faked.

Potential clients will perceive this as well as they read your posts, and will feel they can trust you I am certain. I know I do!

Jay - thanks so much for that. The power of blogging is unbelievable. Who would have thought that there would be a medium by which we could communicate on-line openly like this? There are no fronts and no sugar coating and I will speak for myself when I say that I wear my heart on my sleeve.

The thing about that slap is that the person throwing it so obviously seems to know something intimate about you, enough so that they say it with such confidence, when there is no basis for fact, most of the time they don't know you at all.

When I witness this behavior I wonder how this person got to such a point that they could be this delusional and mean.  How on earth does anybody say something so obviously meant to be be hurtful and harmful, and defamatory if said in front of others, without any cold hard facts?

It is very defamatory and downright unfriendly.  Hmmm, defamatory? Perhaps like defamation of character!  That sounds like lawsuit stuff.  Oh No, the California must have rubbed off on this transplanted New Yorker, there I go taking it back to a potential lawsuit.  I never thought about these things when I lived in NY, geez...

Sorry this ignorant woman offended you.

Sorry that ignorant people feel like they have a right to just plain old bad behavior.  But it is her loss.

She will never know what a nice person you really are.

She will never have the opportunity to avail herself of your superior service.

She will never be as well protected with another Realtor than she would have been if you had represented her.

She may find herself sitting on the other side of the table from you one day, with you representing the other party in a transaction.  That day, she may see who you really are.

That day, she will know that she is just small.

Laurie - it's just ridiculous that some people started looking down at us when we became Realtors. It's beyond them that I would want to do something good for someone else. You are right.....that person WILL sit on the other side of the transaction and will have an "OH" moment.......you NY personality shows through....without a doubt! : )

Your post is reflective of the state of isolation people have become accustomed to.  The basis of trust is familiarity.  We used to become familiar by speaking with people face to face.  In our increasingly isolated world, we employ e-mail, or text messaging to communicate with people.  We lose all of the communication associated with voice and observation.  Shakespere could place emotion in words, most other mortals cannot.

Since more people have difficulty trusting, more and more people assume that everyone is selfish and focused on themselves.  That is because in most cases, those same people that question your motives by offering to champion a cause that is not yours are selfish and isolated.

We have developed great methods to transmit information quickly across the world.  E-mail and texting are efficient and generally non intrusive.  Unfortunately, those same methods dehumanize us,and isolate us from the rest of society, while making us believe that we are somehow more capable.

Since e-mail, etc. are not going away, the social network of blogging may offer a partial solution toward improving our need to communicate.  Keep Blogging.  Pass out cards with your  blog url to your contacts (and the naysayers).  Tell them to stop being so rudely judgemental, and start blogging. It's not face to face, but it may be the best thing going today.

Larry - thanks so much for your opinion. You are right about the dehumanizing aspect of business in general and that's why blogging is so incredible. People can actually learn to know us, can have conversation and learn to trust us. Those of us that are willing to put it out there will have a great advantage.

How is the real estate market in Miami?

Jay - the real estate market in Miami is currently favoring buyers, just like in most of the country. The condo market is getting hit the hardest because of the growing inventory (which will keep increasing as new construction is completed).

The luxury market is still booming though, and we do have some great areas in Miami. Thanks for the visit.
