Art Basel Miami Frenzy

by: Ines.Hegedus-Garcia on November 28, 2007 02:03:10     6 comments »

A lot of people question whether or not  the sexy city of Miami deserves Art Basel - are you kidding me?

Being the gateway to Latin America and Europe and with the cultural diversity that we have, there could not be a better place (thats obviously my opinion).   The best part of  Art Basel Miami is that it is not just limited to the Miami Beach Convention Center.  Miami is transformed into an overwhelming array of artful events and entertainment.

From special events in Miami Beach Hotels like The Delano and Loews, to subsidiary fairs like Design Miami at the Miami Design District.  Every single local art gallery partakes in the event to showcase artists from all over the world.  Home owners open their homes for showings of their private art collections.  You better have a plan if you are an art aficionado coming to Miami to experience the art frenzy.

Art Basel Miami is the perfect culmination of design style, glamour, ambience and culture which have led not only to the new $220 million Miami Art Museum (MAM) space in downtown, but also to the $18 million new wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami.

Freelance jounalist Phoebe Hoban pulls it all together in Miami Splash, written for Smithsonian.com and gives you a taste of whats to come.

I have to add that I am truly amazed at the scale of this event.  Art Basel grows each year and there are events all over Miami.  In a city where art was never a focus, its really amazing to see people really coming together to display the best art of the world.

Nude in South Beach for Spencer Tunick

by: Ines.Hegedus-Garcia on October 08, 2007 23:49:28     6 comments »

There are pretty incredible artists out there in the world, but today we were fortunate to have Spencer Tunicks creative genius in action at The Sagamore Hotel in South Beach.  Some people may think this is a bit “out there”, but whatever your opinion, you cant take away the fact that it is creative.

Tunick is known for shooting masses of naked bodies across the world.  Todays photo shoot started with The Sagamores 15 balconies full of Naked bodies.

North Miami's MoCa - Museum of Contemporary Art

by: Ines.Hegedus-Garcia on September 18, 2007 01:32:17     2 comments »

There is a place in North Miami worth making mention and it does not get enough credit or recognition,  The Museum of Contemporary Art which opened its doors in February 1996.  The structure was designed by Charles Gwathmey  in collaboration with the Miami firm of Gelabert-Navia.

The purpose of the museum was to create an incredible space for exhibiting the work of contemporary masters, discovering new artists, and learning about art and its heritage.  The museum is known for its innovative exhibitions and maintains an active schedule which can be seen in their website.

A lot of people will be able to identify this Mural in Miami - Graffiti?

I dont think so! but this murals predecessor was  ‘ERIN’ from behind.

It has been a controversial piece and has become a Miami landmark…definitely another MIAMISM!!

I go by this mural at least twice per week and you have to admire it - its located on Biscayne Boulevard and I-195.

Do you have your own Miamism you would like to share? Send us your ideas at info@Miamism.com.  You may be featured!

Miami's Romero Britto

Romero Britto - The Hug

Today I started thinking about art in Miami and the first name that came to mind was Romero Britto.  Its very difficult to drive around Miami without seeing one of his works.  So who is this guy anyway?  Romero Britto is an extremely talented pop artist born in Brazil in 1963 who now lives in Miami.

His “talent” is a controversial topic in Miami because the art industry considers Britto to be too commercialized.  The question here becomes whether it is acceptable to commercialize your art or not - I personally love the naive nature of it and this Britto is an extremely intelligent man for being able to make money from his art (not something a lot of current artists can do).

One of the best articles I found is by Alex Williams of the New York Times, who describes how Brittos work is found everywhere, including Gloria Estefans home in Star Island, Fort Lauderdale Buses, Miami Childrens Museum, housing complexes, parks, and Metro-Rail stations, to name a few.  (I even have a signed lithograph in my dining room! - but Alex doesnt mention that in his article).
