Miami Shores Summer Camps - 2008

by: Ines.Hegedus-Garcia on April 24, 2008 14:04:17     Leave a comment »

It is that time of the year again to tell you about Miami Summer Camps. We received a couple of phone calls last month asking why our article wasnt up and the truth is that most summer camps are organized at the very last minute and the information was not available. (maybe its a Miami Thing...could it be a "Miamism?")

Miami Summer Camps

Planning for summer camps for the kids can be very stressful because you dont even know where to begin. Hopefully this list will make it easier for you and will serve as a guide. If I miss any camps, feel free to add them to the comment section for others to see.

Most of you know that I have 3 kids of different ages, and not only have we done a lot of research on summer camps, we have also visited a lot of these in person as well as have sent our kids and have first hand experience. Hopefully this information will be helpful to local families to find activities for their kids as well as those families that are in Miami for the summer.

***MIAMI SHORES SUMMER CAMPS - (organized by The Miami Shores Recreation Department). These include a series of camps offered throughout the summer for different ages including:

Woman's Cancer Association chooses Cancer Research Grants

Heidi Hewes Chapter of the WCAEvery so often I write about The Miami Shores Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Womans Cancer Association of The University of Miami. I have explained how Im co-president and how this small organization does an amazing job of involving the community and raising funds that go directly to cancer research.

I have mentioned the different events we are involved in:

But now I have to tell you about the most important achievement of the year. The Miami Shores Heidi Hewes Chapter, together with 3 other chapters around Miami, make up the WCA. The money raised by all chapters is given as grants to fund cancer research projects.

I am often asked what the money raised is used for and decided to give you the exact information of the awarded grants:

  • Nandor Garamszegi PhD & Sean P. Scully, MD, PhD - Sarcoma Biology Laboratory - Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. Sylvester CCC. - $100,000 were granted to research The Role of Tissue Degradation in Invasion and Metastasis of Osteosarcoma metastases.

The Miami Country Day Walk for Cancer, was dedicated to a senior by the name of Harry Greenberg who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma shortly before the walk. Harry Greenberg is a young man that inspires many people today because of his bravery and determination. Not only did Harry serve in the Walk for Cancer in prior years, but he also pushed and encouraged his classmates and loved ones and with his help, Miami Country Day raised almost $100,000 for cancer research.

The WCA was proud to grant $100,000 to go directly to the research of Osteosarcoma. Harry Greenbergs fight against cancer will not go unheard and will help so many others that face the same disease. Thanks Harry! Your courage is humbling and you are an inspiration to many.

Give Back! - Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Woman's Cancer Association

Volunteering and giving backI truly believe that it is very important to give back and to volunteer.  We lead busy lives with our families, jobs and friends and sometimes we don't realize that helping one another is part of the equation.  This past year I was lucky to be part of an incredible organization in Miami Shores which is a chapter of the Woman's Cancer Association of the University of Miami.

I was co-president, together with Tammy Austin and what we achieved as a group is nothing short of amazing.  Before I tell you about our achievements, let me tell you a little about The Miami Shores Heidi Hewes Chapter of the WCA.

We're a small group of men and women and meet the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 PM at one of the members' homes.  We discuss upcoming events and fundraisers, have some hors d'oeuvres provided by the host of the meeting and share a nice time together.  There is also a junior membership for kids 12 and older. This past year, we raised over $120,000 which will go directly to cancer research!

Calle Ocho - Miami

I can't believe Calle Ocho is this Sunday, March 16th!! I saw this billboard this week and thought this is one of those events that defines Miami. This is what the official website has to say about it:

"CALLE OCHO is the culmination of Carnaval Miami .....the big one! Calle Ocho opens its 23 blocks with activities for adults and children of all ages. Hundreds of kiosks of international foods line the way along with sampling of free products. Over one million people come from all over the world to attend this street party that is widely covered by major networks and international press".

This is definitely .......another MIAMISM!!

**remember to send us your Miamisms, we will love to feature them on "Miamism Fridays" **
